First thing you notice: the ANC is absurd
Sony already dominated ANC before.
But XM6 genuinely pushes it further.
The new processor + 12-microphone setup isolates airplane rumble, office chatter, AC noise and train noise at a level that almost feels unnatural sometimes. Multiple reviewers and users describe it as the best ANC currently available.
What impressed us most wasn’t silence itself.
It was how stable the ANC feels.
Older ANC headphones often fluctuate or create pressure weirdness. XM6 adapts smoother and feels less distracting during long use.
And transparency mode?
Probably the closest thing yet to “not wearing headphones.” One Reddit user literally described it as sounding like “the normal world, without headphones.”
Sound quality is finally cleaner
This matters because older XM generations had a reputation:
👉 huge bass, but muddy mids.
XM6 still has Sony’s warm tuning, but it’s noticeably more refined.
Compared to XM5:
vocals sound cleaner
highs feel less veiled
bass is tighter
separation improved
The soundstage is still not “audiophile open-back” level obviously — but for wireless ANC headphones, it’s genuinely impressive.
That said:
People coming from studio headphones or Sennheiser/Beyerdynamic style tuning still often find the XM6 too consumer-focused and bass-leaning. Reddit discussions especially split hard here. Some users love the musicality, others still call them slightly muddy at this price.
Reality is:
These are designed to sound enjoyable, not clinically accurate.
And for most people?
That’s the right choice.
Sony quietly fixed one of the biggest XM5 complaints
The folding design is back.
Sounds minor.
It’s not.
People HATED losing foldability on XM5 because the case became huge and travel convenience dropped massively.
Sony listened.
XM6 folds again — and frequent travelers immediately noticed the difference.
Comfort is excellent… but not universally perfect
For most users:
✔ lightweight
✔ soft padding
✔ great for long sessions
But after digging through real user discussions, one recurring complaint absolutely keeps appearing:
👉 shallow earcups.
People with larger ears or glasses sometimes struggle getting a perfect seal, and ANC performance drops slightly when that happens.
Some users also mention stronger clamp pressure compared to Bose QC Ultra.
So while comfort is very good overall:
Bose still probably wins pure “forget you’re wearing them” comfort.
Call quality is MUCH better now
This is one area Sony clearly targeted hard.
Previous XM models had decent calls indoors but struggled outside.
XM6 changes that.
Voice isolation is dramatically cleaner, especially in wind and traffic. Several reviewers called these among the best microphones currently available on over-ear ANC headphones.
For remote workers:
This upgrade alone is actually meaningful.
Battery life still remains elite
Sony basically kept the formula people already loved:
around 30h battery with ANC
fast charging still excellent
multipoint connectivity works reliably
app customization remains one of the best in the industry
Sony’s app is honestly underrated.
The EQ, adaptive modes and automation features are still ahead of most competitors.
The weak points nobody should ignore
⚠️ Price is brutal
At full price, these are expensive.
And honestly?
XM4/XM5 still deliver maybe 80–90% of the experience for far less money now.
⚠️ Touch controls remain divisive
Some people love them.
Others absolutely hate accidental swipes and taps.
This hasn’t changed much from older Sony generations.
⚠️ Build quality still creates some anxiety
XM6 feels better than XM5 overall.
But Sony’s recent hinge reputation still makes some buyers nervous after XM5 durability controversies online.
We didn’t experience issues ourselves, but it’s something buyers genuinely discuss now.
The reality
Sony finally made a version that feels complete.
XM4 was legendary.
XM5 improved sound/ANC but frustrated many users.
XM6 feels like Sony combining the best parts of both.
And the result is probably the strongest all-around wireless headphone currently available.
Not necessarily the absolute best at every single thing…
But the best balance of:
✔ ANC
✔ sound
✔ smart features
✔ portability
✔ battery
✔ microphone quality
Pros• arguably the best ANC currently available | Cons• very expensive |
|---|
Final verdict
After going through extensive user feedback and testing impressions, one thing becomes clear:
The XM6 isn’t revolutionary.
It’s refined.
And that refinement matters.
Sony fixed many real complaints people had about older XM models without ruining what already made them great.
⭐ Probably the best all-around premium ANC headphones you can buy right now.
